Compton, California (October 28, 2016) – The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season finale thrilled capacity crowds in Chandler, Arizona this past weekend as Greg Adler and his #10 Pro 4 truck traded paint with the sport's elite at Wild Horse Motorsports Park. The two-day doubleheader treated audiences to Saturday's final points race of the season, The 4 Wheel Parts Off-Road Nationals and then brought them back on Sunday for the unbridled chaos of the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup.
While Friday's early practice sessions allowed Adler and Team 4 Wheel Parts a first look at the newly revised 7/10th mile track on the outskirts of Phoenix, the day left Adler looking to capture the speed that would put him in the thick of the next day's race. Not finding any advantage in the morning's qualifying session, Adler was forced to begin the afternoon's main event deep in the field. As the green flag dropped on the season's final round of championship racing, Adler quickly accelerated into the rapid pace it would require to advance through the pack. While he worked his way around a number of slower competitors and into sixth position, the time spent making those aggressive moves left him with precious few laps and ultimately he finished in that position.
"We didn't qualify the way we'd have liked so we knew we'd have to make some passes and work hard to move through the pack," said Adler. "We ran a solid race but it just took a bit too long to make some of those passes to improve our position. It's a tight field with a lot of talent out here so now we're going to go back and see what we can do to get ready for tomorrow."
Sunday's unique race format combined two classes, Pro 2 and Pro 4, that race separately throughout the season, and places them on the track for a one-race shootout for a $30,000 purse and off-season bragging rights. As the most prestigious event in short course off road racing and only one true champion to the event, there is a tradition of no-holds-barred racing that comes with the Challenge Cup event. While there is a perceived advantage in the technology and design of the Pro 4 vehicles, they were given a 15 second handicap at the start of the race. A combination of qualifying and an unfavorable draw left Adler in the unenviable position as the very last truck at the back of the field.
After three attempts at a clean start, the rumble and roar of 20 900-HP trucks filled the valley. Adler clearly took the position of aggressor taking the fight to the field as he continued to improve his position. As he pushed his way through the bedlam, Adler fought his way to as high as fifth place. Continuing his advance, he dropped inside anther truck to complete a pass, his truck over rotated and the two vehicles collided, damaging Adler's front suspension and steering beyond repair, retiring him from the event.
"This is one of those races where the flag drops and you just have to go," said Adler. "I'm not sure I knew exactly what spot we were in but I know we passed a lot of cars and the race just felt like it was coming to me. We're disappointed. Their hard work doesn't show in the final results but the crew worked hard to give us a strong truck today and it showed out there."
With the 2016 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing season completed, Adler and Team 4 Wheel Parts now look to off-season updates for his Pro 4 and testing sessions as they prepare to return in 2017 when the series opens their season in Chandler, Arizona.
"There is an amazing team of hardworking guys that gets us to the track every race on this team and I want to thank each of them for their effort this season," said Adler. "There is also a great group of incredible volunteers who are there each weekend putting in long, hard hours to make sure we're ready to compete. The generous support of our sponsors and partners make this all possible and we are extremely grateful for their commitment to Greg Adler Motorsports and Team 4 Wheel Parts."
