Bill Savage is an innovator in the off road community. He's built race winning pro trucks, manufactured some the most reliable trophy trucks, and also assembled and designed the world's fastest snowmobile - completely taking the industry by surprise. But before he was ever interested in off road racing, Savage was a young college student with his own welding/metal fabrication shop called TMAG Welding.
Bill's passion for off road vehicles came after watching his first Baja 1000 in 1974. Immediately, he was hooked, and it didn't take long for Savage to start using his shop as a workspace to build his first race car. After years of balancing school and a busy shop, Bill lined up to race the Baja 1000 in 1979. He shocked the off road racing world when he won his class. He had found his calling.
Prior to joining the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, Savage was part of many business ventures, including Wide Open Baja, a tour company that gave non racers the Baja experience. Bill founded Wide Open Baja with his business partner, Todd Clements, and used his employees at TMAG to build prototype cars for the tours.
A few years after starting Wide Open Baja, Bill left the company to open his own performance race shop called Speed and Performance by Design (SPD Products). Staying true to his company's name, Bill and SPD Products went on to build some of the industry's best race vehicles and won many events, including the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. His success as a builder and engineer ended up earning SPD Products a meeting with NASA, resulting in a groundbreaking endeavor that saw SPD build three Lunar Rovers and two Mars Rovers.
In total, Bill has been designing, engineering and building all types of race vehicles for more than 40 years. However, while being known for his ability to improve a vehicle's performance, Savage has also always stood at the forefront of safety. Bill has literally written the rulebooks for many major off road organizations, including the High Desert Racing Association (HDRA), Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group (MTEG) and SCORE International, for over 30 years.
His experience in vehicle development and his commitment to driver safety was exactly what LOORRS was searching for in 2014, and the Series picked him up as soon as they could. In his role as Technical Director for LOORRS, Savage's main responsibility is safety for both drivers and fans. He also ensures that race vehicles are legally allowed to compete in their class.
In 2017, Bill's name was forever etched into the off road industry history books when he was recognized for his innovations and advances in driver safety by being inducted into the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Bill is a wholesome individual with a passion for off road racing and a desire to see others do their best. And just like the rest of us, he can't wait to get back to racing.
"I hope we can get back to racing soon. My staff and I work hard all year round to make sure we're ready for anything that comes up during the season," said Savage. "The current pandemic has stopped our regular work routine for now, but we're adjusting and focusing our attention on how to prepare for the day we're back to racing so we can ensure everyone involved remains safe and healthy."
We appreciate everything you do for us, Bill. Can't wait to see you out on the race track soon!
